Liberal Senator Heffernan accused of assault
Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan has been accused of attacking a suspended electorate officer at a branch meeting on the New South Wales central coast. Ray Carter, who worked for New South Wales Energy Minister Chris Hartcher, has signed a statutory declaration claiming Senator Heffernan knocked him off balance during the meeting. Mr Carter also alleges Senator Heffernan approached him at the end of the meeting, saying he did not know that Mr Carter was a "poofter."

Blind dissident Chen arrives in US
High-profile Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng has arrived in the United States after being flown out of Beijing with his immediate family. The blind activist, who came to prominence exposing forced abortions in the Chinese countryside, has told reporters he is grateful that the Chinese government had been dealing with "restraint and calm". Mr Chen was at the centre of a diplomatic crisis between China and the US after he dramatically escaped home detention and fled to the American embassy in the Chinese capital.
